Bathroom Renovation – Part 6: The Reveal – finally!

Four months later, the final details are finished! Things got delayed because I was M.I.A.: Lost in the Garden for several weeks. I’m really happy with the final results, and finishing the last things myself after the ridiculousness of the ‘designer‘ I hired, was especially satisfying. Now it’s entirely my vision and finished to the level I expect. Anal? Well, yes I am.

The only thing I really don’t like about the new bathroom?

I still have to clean the damn thing! 😏

Disclaimer: This is staged – the floofy white hand towels are only for my sink. The kids will use the old black towels until I find the right shade of dark blue. White towels wouldn’t last two days!

I love these air plants – so easy to look after, just soak them in the sink overnight every 7-10 days.

I made this towel rack from a piece of driftwood I found on Willows Beach. I followed these instructions but first I baked it for several hours in a 200 degree oven, flipping it every hour, to make sure it was really dry and there were no critters living in it. I sprayed it with matte sealant which changed the colour a little bit but I’m okay with that.

I also added invisible hangers by drilling two holes all the way through under two of the hangers, then using a countersink to stop the long screws from going all the way through. It’s really solid on the wall just with plastic anchors and long screws. I love that it’s one-of-a-kind and that I made it myself. So satisfying!

    After living through 2 bathroom renovations in 2 years, I totally can appreciate the process you just emerged from. And finishing some details yourself…I did the same. Now we live in a condo; but I know those “new” bathrooms helped sell the house.
    A self-cleaning bathroom: the next important discovery 🙂

  10. It’s looking amazing, Amanda! I love that you’ve staged the towels for the photoshoot, I would have to stage a lot of things to make our bathroom presentable!! I bet you’re relieved to have it looking great & being more functional. That air plant thingy is really interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them before. Are they expensive? Going to have to do some online window shopping.. 😉

    1. Thanks Caz! You’re right, it’s a huge relief!! The air plants are becoming quite popular here. I bought these at a garden store but they now sell them at Canadian Tire! Not too expensive, $4-10 each or so. Sadly, the bathroom doesn’t look anything like the photos most days but that’s life, right? Self-clean would be amazing but I don’t need to live in a magazine. Life’s messy! 😊💕

  15. Late reading this as wading through backlog of emails. Anyway, looks great after all you faced. My wife and I just had a bathroom made more disabled friendly, but the results aren’t worth the massive amount we spent – $25k+. Only real benefit is that my wheelchair fits under my sink, but I can’t transfer into the walk-in tub as planned.

    1. Thanks Roland. I’m so sorry your renovation didn’t get you what you were after. It is unreal how much it all costs – especially when the work usually ends up being sub-standard. So many call themselves experts but the real ones are few and far between. But unless you can do it yourself, they’ve got you. And I consider myself pretty handy, but not THAT handy! 🙂
